Results - 49th Annual Credit River Downriver Race March 31, 2207
Thanks again to Linda Reiche for once again organizing on behalf of OVKC. The weather was cool but dry, with a nippy wind chill. Competitors and volunteers were glad to have access to a warm meeting room and washrooms courtesy of the Portico Community Church. All 23 boats completed the run successfully, which is a lower than average number of competitors. The youngest competitor was David Klingenberg at 8 years old, and the furthest driver was Doug Bushnell from New York State. Thanks to the volunteers who helped out: Peter Arthur, Fred Bergen, Brendan Brady, Mike Housely, Orrin Kasper, Lawrence Laamanen, Steve Lukasko, Jim Mark, Colin Moneypenny and Michael Twitchin. Whitewater Ontario February
According to an OVKC member, a representative at the Whitewater Ontario booth at the Outdoor Adventure Show said "OVKC has disbanded". Recalling a quote from Mark Twain going approximately "reports of our demise are exaggerated", possibly the confusion stems from the recent change in our membership status with WO. For purposes of insurance, OVKC has joined ORCKA, which offers more appropriate insurance for OVKC club activities. We remain an organziational supporter of Whitewater Ontario and encourage our members to provide financial support and participation in the many important intitiatives being carried out by WO. For more information on WO, please visit our links page...

RIVER SIGNALS - hand signals & whistle usage July, 2001
These signals may be substituted with an alternate set of signals agreed upon by the group.

WHISTLE SIGNALS:

(Note: avoid overuse of whistle - if the event has been "blown" don't duplicate)

1 long blast = swimmer!

What to do? If you can safely provide assistance, please do. If there's already help on the scene - Don't get in the way!

2 long blasts = Upstream hazard or traffic

What to do? Get out of the way - don't enter the wave or hole, and get out of it if you hear the signal

3 long blasts = HELP! EMERGENCY!

What to do? Assist the signaler as quickly as possible. Add a visual signal if possible, i.e. vigorously wave a lifejacket or paddle to draw attention.

HAND SIGNALS:

STOP: Potential hazard ahead. Wait for "all clear" signal before proceeding, or scout ahead. Form a horizontal bar with your outstretched arms. Those seeing the signal should pass it back to others in the party.

HELP/EMERGENCY: Assist the signaler as quickly as possible. Give three long blasts on a police whistle while waving a paddle, helmet or life vest over your head. If a whistle is not available, use the visual signal alone. A whistle is best carried on a lanyard attached to your life vest.

ALL CLEAR: Come ahead (in the absence of other directions proceed down the center). Form a vertical bar with your paddle or one arm held high above your head. Paddle blade should be turned flat for maximum visibility. To signal direction or a preferred course through a rapid around obstruction, lower the previously vertical "all clear" by 45 degrees toward the side of the river with the preferred route. Never point toward the obstacle you wish to avoid.

I'm OK: I'm OK and not hurt. While holding the elbow outward toward the side, repeatedly pat the top of your head.
